Charles Durrans Atkisnon
10/05/1928 - 03/08/2021
Mesa, AZ
Charles Durrans Atkinson, age 92, passed away March 8, 2021 in Mesa, Arizona with his loving wife, Peg at his side. He was born October 5, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Clea Merl Reynolds Durrans and Ross Inman Durrans.

After serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the British Isles, he married Margaret Delight Allen September 13, 1957 in the Logan Utah Temple while attending Utah State University where they met. To Mom and Dad, Friday the 13th has always been a lucky day. They were the only ones in the county and maybe even in the state who were married that day. After graduating with a degree in electronic engineering in 1960, they moved to Anaheim, California. They are the parents of 5 children and over the years, shared their home with nieces, nephews and foster children.

Chuck’s life was full of service to others. He served in the Boy Scout organization for many years, and in various capacities in the Church. He served as a member of bishoprics, as a Stake Missionary, as a family history consultant and as a Temple Worker in the Mesa Arizona Temple. When Chuck was unable to attend the temple due to health reasons, he developed expertise in many aspects of family history/genealogy research and continued this the rest of his life.

Scouting was an important part of Chuck’s life, a way he connected with his 4 sons and, yes, his daughter too. Through scouting, he and his children had many wonderful experiences while at the same time, his sons earned their Eagle Awards. He camped and hiked hundreds of miles with the scouts and his family.

Chuck was always ready to help someone in need. Whether it be a family that needed help moving, a yard that needed fixing or whatever needed doing, Chuck seemed to be there and knew how to take care of it.
After Chuckʻs Retirement, he and Peg served in the Mesa Arizona Temple.

His examples in working hard, being generous to others, and always serving in church callings were the best teachers his children and grandchildren had. He is remembered for his love of his family, love of nature, his intelligence, integrity, wit and innovations, his love of a good laugh and adding his own touch to every recipe.

Chuck is survived by his wife Margaret (Peggy) Delight Allen Atkinson and children: Avrile (Brett) OʻBrien of Mission Viejo, California; Allen (Darlynda) Atkinson of Makawao, Hawaiʻi; Bryan (Ruth) Atkinson of Mesa, Arizona; Curt Atkinson of Mesa, Arizona; and Nathan Atkinson of Mesa, Arizona; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, as well as siblings, Robert (Ruth) Durrans, Barbara Christy, Richard (Margaret) Durrans, Gerald (Lanola) Durrans, Raymond (Susann) Durrans, Larry (Shirley) Durrans and sister in law Verlene Durrans. He is preceded in death by sisters Zona Durrans Parkinson and Vila Jean Durrans, brothers David Atkinson and Lynn Durrans, 1 granddaughter and a great granddaughter.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday March 27, at 11am. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located at 1455 N. Harris in Mesa Arizona. Services will be live streamed via zoom for others who would like to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the Special Olympics in your area.

Condolences

"Chuck was a dear friend. He taught me much in scouting. He taught me and my son, Larry, to backpack and took us on our first backpack trip in the Sierras followed by a couple of 50 milers. I was home teacher to his family when they were young and learned to love each one. It was a sweet experience seeing most of them as adults on Zoom at the funeral. I was very proud of the whole family, how they've grown and developed and become wonderful adults. Their musical talents are amazing. What a great family and what great examples. The funeral was very well done, the talks and the music were wonderful. I want to express my sympathy to Peggy and my great appreciation for all she's done. Chuck will be greatly missed but you can be very proud of him and all you've both done in raising and supporting such a wonderful family!! Phil Strong, Morro Bay, CA (Philipstrong35@gmail.com)"
