Susan Ann Murray Newman, 81, of Chandler, Arizona, passed away on February 28, 2026. Born July 17, 1944, she lived a life defined by grace, warmth, and unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and community.
Susan was adopted by Vincent Murray and Mae Molkenbur and lived her early years in Bexley, Ohio. She attended Miami University of Oxford, Ohio, where she met her first husband Jeffrey Smith. She and Jeffrey moved to Muskegon, Michigan in 1966 where she lived most of her adult life and raised her sons Stephen and Adam.
Susan enjoyed her many years working at Mercy Hospital in the imaging department, where she made lasting friendships and was known for her kindness and caring for others. In 2023, she moved to Chandler, Arizona, to be closer to her son and his family, a decision that brought her great comfort and joy.
Susan was a lovely woman—beautiful, classy, and kind in spirit. She adored walking her dogs through the woods and along the beaches of Lake Michigan. She deeply appreciated her friends and family and found true happiness in spending meaningful time with those she loved including watching movies and listening to a wide variety of music. Her warmth, elegance, and gentle presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. Susan will be remembered with love and gratitude for a well-lived life and a heart that gave generously to others.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brian Newman, in 1992 and by her beloved son, Stephen Smith, in 2009. She is survived by her son Adam Smith and his wife Regan (Poel) Smith and her cherished grandchildren, Claire and Samuel Smith who lovingly called her “Mimi.”
A Celebration of Life honoring Susan’s memory will be held for friends and family on June 13, 2026, 1pm-4pm at Lake Bluff Grille, Shore Room, located at 2801 Lakeshore Drive, Muskegon, Michigan 49441.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Muskegon Rescue Mission in Susan’s name.
