George Henry Matthews III “Matt”, 82 of Mesa, AZ passed away July 16th surrounded by family. He leaves behind his wife of 41 years, Donna (Cromer) Matthews, Four sons and one daughter George Matthews IV of Nashua, NH; Erin Neil and husband Scott of Maricopa AZ; John Matthews and wife Alina of San Jose, CA; Evan Lambert and wife Liz of Phoenix, AZ; and Reyo Matthews and wife Julie of Webster, MA. Also he leaves behind nine grandchildren Derrek, Lindsay, Megan, Dreama, Alekzander, Cecylia, Jayden, Reyo, and Archer; 2 sisters Nancy Skiba, and Janann Bruno; and many nieces and nephews
George was born in Chicago, IL; the eldest child of George H. Matthews Jr. and Emily (Meyers) Matthews both of whom predeceased him. After high school he joined the Air Force which eventually brought him to Arizona where he remained for the rest of his life.
George had a love for the outdoors where he loved to spend his free time, most notably behind the controls of a sailing vessel. He was always making “Excuses, Excuses” to get down to Mexico and get out on the water. His love for the outdoors extended to fishing and hunting, where for years he went with family to the Baboquivari Peaks, and even if the hunts weren’t always successful, sitting around the campfire telling stories and enjoying everyone’s company was always worth the long trip to the wilderness. George also was an accomplished athlete playing sports in high school and developing a love of running later in life. This love of running had him competing in Marartons and 10Ks till he was past 60.
George also had an artistic streak, and could draw well, but he truly loved music. He often would play his 12-string guitar at Christmas gatherings while the family sang carols. He was full of love and life, and we invite anyone who would like to join us to celebrate his legacy on Saturday, August 15th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Mesa VFW 65 S. MacDonald Mesa, AZ. Lunch will be served. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in George’s memory to the Dignity Health Cancer Institute at St. Joseph’s in Phoenix
